7 Ideas to Discover your Life Purpose

Published on 6 November 2024 at 10:03

You may have asked yourself many times what your purpose in this life time would be. The subject can be overwhelming and you may not know where to start. The certainty that you are in this life time to fulfil your mission - whatever that mission may be - is sufficient reason to become curious about what it actually is.

From the young age of 9 I started to journal about my thoughts and emotions. I recorded everything about my school events, my adventures and what I thought and noticed about people with bad energy.

When I was in my teenage years I noticed that I am not meant to live in my motherland of Germany. I always felt that I was in the wrong country. So, I started writing down my goals for my future. I was dreaming of living abroad, working within the travel industry and have my own home. The more often I wrote about my future dreams, the clearer became the picture in my mind and I started to manifest the life I wanted to live.

This brings me to the first idea to discover what you are here for.

1. Begin to journal about the dreams you have. What would you like to do with your life? What work do you want to do? What are your thoughts about changing your life? What fears do you have? Changing your life can be scary but fascinating.

2. Reflect on your childhood passions. This is an interesting point. I loved reading books and writing when I was a child. I had a bookshelf full of books and had read all of them. At the same time I enjoyed writing in my journal and decided that one day I would write a book. I have published my book "The Rebellious Singleton" a few years ago.

I had other childhood passions, such as playing in my toy supermarket. This led me later in life to do a trainee ship as a retailer.

But my biggest passion was travelling, writing and living abroad.

3. Seek out Role models. Who is your role model? What have they been through in life and how have they turned around their lives? What is their passion? And what have they done to achieve the life they now live? Think about the obstacles and challenges they had to overcome to better their lives.

Think about what parts of their live can you adopt and what can you do better or different?

My personal role model is Hilary Devey. She has overcome a lot of obstacles in her life, including a divorce and a son who became a drug addict. She dealt with her obstacles while she was building her multi-million pounds business.

4. Conduct a life audit - evaluate different aspects of your life. This is one of the best ways to reflect on where you are at currently. Are you happy with the life you lead? What does well and what needs your attention? The main areas that usually need to be evaluated are finances, work/career and relationships. Other areas of life are leisure, personal development, spiritual development, and the environment you live in.

Once you have worked out what needs to be dealt with first, write yourself an action plan and take the necessary steps to resolve the situation.

5. Reflect on feedback and criticism constructively. This may not be the idea you want to hear. But I remember that I was given feedback at work once that I wasn't resilient enough. Never take anything personal when a colleague or a customer on the phone is angry and says things you may take too heart. Always remember that they have had a bad day or got up with the wrong foot.

Being resilient is a good value to have. It can be learned.

The other feedback I was once given was that I would make a good instructor/teacher. A colleague told me that. They were looking for instructors with the company I used to work for and they were thinking of giving me the chance.

6. Create a mind map of your interests and goals. The picture on the left hand side is an example of a mind map. It doesn't have to be that complicated.

But what you can do is that you choose a main topic, such as "My Hobbies". you write it in the centre of a sheet of paper and circle it. Then you create little branches with your pen and add arrows at each end and write a hobby.

Then you continue with a second and third branch.... and write more hobbies at the end.

Write down all the hobbies you once had and all the hobbies/interests you were never able to try out.

What do you want to try out? And what hobby are you mostly drawn to? This could be your life purpose.

7. Engage in lifelong learning. You may now say that you have a stressful full time job, have a family to look after and want to go out when you have a chance. I understand. Fun and relaxation is important. There are online courses you can work on whenever you have the time. I personally love learning new skills and always do my research on what courses are available and what is my heart drawn to.

You may find a new career and your life purpose may just be discovered when you are looking for an online to study.
